This was the capital of Siam from 1335-1767 and is located 50 miles north of Bangkok. It was home to 33 Kings. The myth is that all the Buddha heads were filled with precious emeralds, diamonds and rubies, therefore all the statues are now headless due to looters searching for treasure. One head lodged itself in the roots of a tree and has become an icon in Thailand.
We roamed the grounds of the crumbling temples and were able to take a ride on the back of an elephant as well - felt like the saddle was going to fall right off with us in it. It was an uneasy ride.
