This area was used for farming shrimp but due to farming practices of the time, pretty much destroyed the habitat. The mangrove is now under conservation and we got to do our part and plant some trees. We took a motor boat our to the where the river empties out into the Gulf of Siam. The Macaque monkeys were swarming the boat. Why? Because the drivers were giving them bananas. Many of the monkeys had little ones clinging on for dear life. You could definitely see that there was a hierarchy among them as there were several who stayed behind on the remnants of trees longing for bananas. If I had any bananas, which I didn’t, I would have lobed them their way.
One of the guys on the boat used what looked like a snow board to paddle us to the spot we were to plant the trees. The mud was very soft and free of grit and the water was really warm. Erich and I planted our trees and received applause for returning to the boat without falling in the watery mud.
