In Gijorkaster we visited the Skenduli House and the owner gave us a personalized tour. The house has been in the Skenduli family for generations. The communists wanted this house and asked for deed to the property in which the father of the current owner said there was none. The comrades asked the father to sign a piece of paper stating that he sold the house to the government for $240. The father said no and spent the next six months in jail. His family was forced to live in apartment. They lost vast amounts of land as well. When communism failed, the father produced the deed to the house and land. He got the house back but not the land, the land had been developed an people were living there. His son now takes care of the house and offers tours, charging a small fee to help maintain the house.
