Thessaloniki is in the region of Macedonia, not to be confused with the Former Yugoslavia Republic of Macedonia. Macedonia, Greece is where Alexander the Great is from and we visited Dion at the base of Mount Olympus where he lived as a child.
We packed up one of the suitcases with dirty laundry and walked a mile and a half on the busy streets Thessaloniki to the laundromat. We were going to do it at the hotel but it would have cost us 230 Euro. Um, no. We spent ten Euro instead. We explored the city, walked along the waterfront in the rain and climbed to the top of the White Tower for a bird’s eye view of the city and sea. We ended up at a Cretan restaurant for lunch.

We had some rainy weather when we arrived and it followed us off and on through Macedonia (FYRM) and we purchased our ‘I ♥︎ Greece’ umbrellas in Thessaloniki which came in handy for the rest of the trip. Marble sidewalks are exceptionally slippery in the rain, just saying.
We visited the oldest Byzantine church in the upper city which was built for a wealthy lady so that she could worship alone. There was a fantastic mosaic of Jesus that was covered up with plaster by the Ottomans. The Ottomans plastered over anything that contained human faces in the churches not to destroy, but to convert the churches into mosques. An earthquake revealed the mosaic and the plaster was painstakingly removed.
The museum in Thessaloniki was pretty cool the way it was laid out. It didn’t have a lot of artifacts, just a few choice pieces, a mosaic floor and parts of walls. There was one room that was arranged like a church and there were quite a few of the Orthodox Icons, some capitals and an alter. You had to use your imagination to fill in the gaps. We visited a lot of museums on this trip and they were all different designs making them all interesting.
