Paint Mines - Calhan, Colorado

We found an awesome photo op in Calhan, Colorado. What? How did we miss this after living Colorado for 7 years? The Paint Mines Interpretive Park. The Paint Mines are named for their colorful clays that were collected by American Indians to make paint. Brightly colored bands, caused by oxidized iron compounds, are found in varying amounts throughout the many different layers of clay.

The weather wasn't bad when we first got there, cold and windy, but expected for February. A menacing cloud that was covering Pike's Peak soon enveloped us. The dramatic skies really brought out the fantastic colors in the canyon. Way cool!! It was wet and muddy, some of the the little streams were colored by the clays. On the way back to the car, it got super windy and it started hailing, the size of peas. Hurts when it hits your face and it found a way into my pockets and under my glasses. What is our bad luck with weather on the photo trips? I am ready for summer!
