Thanksgiving Road Trip - Kansas City

This year we spent Thanksgiving in Indiana visiting family and meeting our new great nephew. Great time with the family!  We took the week off and drove from Denver to Kansas City, MO  through Nashville, TN and then up to Louisville, KY.  Our past trips to Indiana we never plan goof off time, but this time I made sure to build in quality time with the cameras.

Kansas City was amazing! I had a few stops planned for our two night stay and we hit them all except for one.  Downtown was a fun shoot, lots of cool architecture and street art.  Street art is our new fascination, probably because we have been doing a fair amount of city shooting lately.  It was sunny and not too cold although I still wore a sweatshirt and a 32 degree jacket, beanie and gloves, but not too cold. Right.  We started early in the morning  to shoot the Kaufman Convention Center.  What an amazing building.  The light was hitting it just right and we spent quite a while there before meandering the streets of downtown.

After shooting the Kaufman Center we took the street car down to the City Market area. Kansas City has a free street car that runs from the City Market to Union Station which made it easy to get around. The City Market was nothing to write home about, most of the shops were closed. We had a cafe Cubano and then were gravitated to a shady area with an abandon building.  We just go where the moment takes us, not really thinking about where we are.  Walking down the hill near the bridge, we were cautious as we were in an area where you would expect to find derelicts and the like but there were none.  Unbelievable!  It was relatively clean as well.  Needless to say we didn't linger, snapped a few shots and headed back up the hill. We caught the street car and headed to the main event - Union Station.

Union Station was the main event for our Kansas City exploration day because they had a Genghis Kahn exhibit.  We walked into the side door of Union Station and through a long hallway adorned with vintage photos of Kansas City and finally reached an enormous room.  This place was gigantic and was decorated in the Christmas spirit.  In the background we could hear singing.  Off the main gallery was a long huge room filled with people and a stage with children dancing and singing Christmas tunes. I could not believe how big this place was, bigger than the Union Station in St. Louis and well, Denver cannot compare. Union Station in Denver is really small.  I wasn't expecting this!

The Genghis Kahn exhibit was fantastic! They did a really good job with the display.  The more we travel the more we are starting to appreciate museums of all kinds. The artifacts were in excellent condition and the craftsmanship was remarkable.  So glad we made this a priority.

Opposite of Union Station is a World War II Monument up on a hill.  Erich gave me a hard time as usual "What is it with you and stairs?", he tells me as we climb and climb for the best view of the Kansas City skyline. "Totally worth it, right?", I tell him.  We stayed up there until dark. Duh, we didn't have the tripods with us, they were in the car. Luckily there was a railing on the monument where we could set the cameras and get some cool night shots.

On to Nashville!

Kansas and Oklahoma Road Trip

Labor Day weekend is a chance to travel farther than a six hour radius from home and see more of this great country.  We try to go to places where half of America is not visiting the same sites.  Therefore, Kansas and Oklahoma! The goal of this trip was to shoot Natural Falls in Siloam Springs, Oklahoma.  Never made it.  We spent a lot of time on Kansas. All the road tips to Indiana to see family, there is absolutely nothing to shoot in Kansas, well not off I-70 anyway.  It wasn't until we headed south to Wichita that we found some cool stuff. First stop was Monument Rocks in Gove County. Kansas.  Rock formation in the middle of farm land. Erich flew the drone around and we snapped a few photos - great start to the trip!! Camera: Fuji XT3 Wichita is really a nice city with a new-ish city center.  The Keeper of the Plains greets visitors on sacred Indian ground between the Little Arkansa and the Arkansa Rivers.  At night fla...

Grand Teton and Yellowstone - Wyoming!

The second road trip of the year we headed to northern Wyoming to visit the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone.  We stayed in Colter Bay, a village in the Grand Tetons, renting a rustic cabin for 4 nights.  This was the home base for our adventures of exploration in the parks. We had a bit of weather the first two days, after all it is Wyoming and you always have to be prepared for anything.  It was quite cold, around the lower 40s in the day time , cloudy and rainy.  We bring our 'Wyoming Bag' on every road trip (gloves, beanies, and 32 degree jackets). This is not great weather for photography, but we pushed through. We brought the IR converted Lumix cameras just for fun. We did some cool stuff in infrared in the Badlands two weeks ago and wanted to keep the trend going.   Camera: FujiFilm XT5, Lumix LX 100, iPhone  Grand Tetons in Infrared  We started the trip in Cody, Wyoming over the weekend intending to avoid the weekenders in the parks.  We strol...

Badlands - Memorial Day Weekend

First road trip of the summer to the Badlands of South Dakota.  We packed up the truck and the Yeti and headed out on a beautiful day excited to get out and escape for a couple of days. Our lunch stop was in the small town of Edgemont, SD.  Cute little city park with a covered bridge, a Canadian Geese family, young boys fishing from the bridge and two large guns flanking the entrance to the park...interesting.  Camera: FujiFilm XT5, Lumix LX100 We had some weather on this trip once we got to Rapid City, which seems to be the norm anymore on our photo trips.  So, we made the best of it and decided t do some long exposure shots in the park and follow some really ominous clouds which resulted in a wicked hail storm.  After it was over it looked like it had snowed. Well, that is spring/summer in the mountains of the west. We were a bit discouraged since the sky just turned to gray, so we left the park and took the Sheep Table Mountain off road trail with a brief sto...
