The structures in Chaco Canyon were inhabited from 950 AD - around 1200 AD. We still have not seen the entire complex of ruins and this was our third time visiting the park. We start at the beginning, walking at least 5 miles around the sites and never make it to the outer most areas. We vowed that next time we will start with the outer most sites and work our way back.
We walked to the Plaza from the AirBnB and the streets around the government buildings were blocked off to traffic, due to the potential of riots on the capitals in all 50 states. The police waived us on through the blockade. This was the weekend after the insurrection at the Capital in Washington DC. No-one showed up to riot, thank goodness.
Out of all the states we have been visiting during COVID, New Mexico was the most restrictive. All of the restaurants downtown were closed to in person dining, take out only. We saw multiple billboards upon entering New Mexico reminding passerby's to mask up and wash your hands. The reservations were still in lockdown and luckily we had no issues driving across the reservation roads to get to Chaco Canyon.
